Velveteen Technique Video + SU Flower Patch + Paper Craft Crew

Hello there! It’s been a while. But, I have reclaimed my life; however, at a great cost. Remember that leisurely craft de-stash I had going on? It’s now going to be a very aggressive process. I’ve had my distress products ready to go, but have not gotten around to doing the video on them yet, or the ice cream cone I keep saying I’m going to get done. I’ve had time issues since the end of January.

Today for the Paper Craft Crew Mid-Week Inspiration, I have a really cool technique to share with you. It’s called the Velveteen technique and it’s simply taking a semi-dense background stamp, inking it up with white craft ink, let it dry naturally, and then stamp your images on top. The white craft ink pattern will show through and create this great look and dimension on your card. It’s very easy and packs in the wow factor for any card. I certainly enjoyed experimenting a little bit. It’s a little bit of a resist technique, but not in the usual way.

I used Stampin’ Up! Flower Patch with cheerful colors for both cards. Each card is an A2 side-folding card. For my first card, the base is Peekaboo Peach layered with Early Espresso with Very Vanilla on top stamped with the En Francais background stamp with Gina K Designs Ivory Pigment Ink Pad stamped off once. To tie in the Early Espresso, the sentiment and centers of the flowers were stamped in the same color. The large flower on both cards is the same color as the card base. Look how great the white pigment ink looks stamped under the flower. Pigment inks dry very slow and sit on top of the card stock rather than being absorbed into the card stock like water-based inks do. That is how you get the resist. It’s called the Velveteen technique since when all of the ink is dry, it’s very soft when you touch it.

I love the overall look of being able to see the background stamping through the flower images. The flowers on both cards are stamped in Daffodil Delight and Pool Party. The leaves are stamped in Wild Wasabi. Each flower has a Rhinestone Jewel in the center.

All products used are by Stampin’ Up! with the exception of the pigment inks, Versafine Black Onyx Ink and the My Favorite Things On the Diagonal background stamp. The video below will show you how I made the cards.
